Call-Out Report: Rescue - Maamturks
- Published on Saturday, 11 April 2009 22:21
Galway Mountain Rescue Team were called out on Saturday 11th April to assist a 61 years old woman who had suffered lower leg injuries on Corcóg Mountain in the Maamturks Range (Connemara, Co. Galway). She had been taking part in the annual Maamturks Walk when she suffered the injury in the early hours of the morning. The weather conditions were fair but due to low cloud base the Shannon-based Coastguard Sikorsky helicopter could not lift the casualty directly and was placed on standby, subsequently flying to Galway Airport to await weather clearance.
Galway MRT sent a first-response party to the casualty's location and stabilised her condition. Additional team resources were then dispatched in order to evacuate her below the cloud base by stretcher. The team coordinated with the helicopter which departed Galway for the scene. The aircraft approached the landing zone and winched down a crew-member to prepare the woman for evacuation. She was airlifted directly to Galway University Hospital, where a waiting ambulance crew transported her to A&E for treatment.
Galway MRT wish to thank the Coastguard crew of Recue 115 for their expert assistance.
